Fernando and Laura coordinate care amongst three paid home aides who split shifts to provide about 40 hours of assistance each week. Because of geographic distance, Maria’s other children provide occasional financial and social support.
Fernando’s father lives in an assisted care facility two hours away. Laura’s family lives across the country with her other siblings. Even from afar, however, Laura is the primary decision maker and communicator of the needs of her parents, because amongst the siblings she is the oldest, is most comfortable making health decisions, and communicates well in both English and her native language.
