Fernando’s Household

Fernando and Laura work in the technology sector in the Bay Area. They have one son in college. Fernando’s mother Maria lives in the home next door to Fernando and Laura. Maria raised three children in the neighborhood and worked as an educator at the local school district. She’s been independent most of her life. But in 2014, she suffered a concussion and skull fracture in a traffic accident. As she recovered, Laura and Fernando noticed she often appeared forgetful and confused. She was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Compounded with other medical issues, Laura and Fernando have become her primary caregivers.

Fernando and Laura coordinate care amongst three paid home aides who split shifts to provide about 40 hours of assistance each week. Because of geographic distance, Maria’s other children provide occasional financial and social support.

Fernando’s father lives in an assisted care facility two hours away. Laura’s family lives across the country with her other siblings. Even from afar, however, Laura is the primary decision maker and communicator of the needs of her parents, because amongst the siblings she is the oldest, is most comfortable making health decisions, and communicates well in both English and her native language.
