Gabrielle’s Household

Karen lives with Gabrielle in their urban home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Gabrielle has lived in the area her whole life. She had a long career in healthcare and retired when she was 60, but began a part-time retail job soon after. Gabrielle also manages her own health needs, including hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

Karen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2004. She requires a complete regimen of 24×7 care, including help eating, toileting, grooming, and dressing. She depends on a wheelchair to be moved around.

Both sleep in a small room just off the kitchen so that Gabrielle can remain alert to Karen’s needs. Because of her apnea, Karen should sleep with a CPAP machine, but does not as the machine might prevent her from hearing Karen. Poor sleep has caused Gabrielle to be tired and to become impatient at times.

SmartThings motion detectors were placed around the main floor of the home. The two Netatmo sensors were placed next to Gabrielle’s bed (in the same room as the TV and Karen’s bed), and in the adjoining bathroom. When home, most of the activity takes place near where the Netatmo sensor was located. The sound level shows clearly when the TV was On, from about 6:00 pm to 1:30 am, and then briefly in the morning. It is also easy to spot when Gabrielle was asleep or out of the house. Slow declines and low levels in the CO2 reading also tell us when the home was empty.
