Hanna’s Household

Hanna and Gaston have been married for about 20 years. Before marrying, Gaston was in a serious accident that left him with a major back injury that has caused him significant pain and discomfort since. They have three grown children; one daughter lives nearby. Hanna’s brother, Harvey lives with Hanna and Gaston. He has intractable epilepsy, Parkinsonism, and other serious health conditions. Gaston and Hanna care for Harvey equally, but as Gaston ages and his pain from his past injuries intensify, Hanna considers the additional caring she’ll need to take on.

The family’s participation occurred from Labor Day Monday through Tuesday. No major incidents or seizures occurred.

Hanna kept a log on paper log while Gaston kept notes with his smartphone. Logging confirmed their awareness of how much time they devoted to care and also how often their activities were interrupted. Because of the data collected throughout Monday and Tuesday, Gaston and Hanna were able to visualize the extent to which they multi-task to meet immediate demands that crop up during the day. Interruption to overall flow made it challenging to classify their activities, since so many overlapped.

Interestingly, despite the amount of caregiving work, lack of personal time, and constant fragmentation of tasks, Gaston and Hanna have a stable routine.

During the interview, Hanna commented on how perceptions of time can shrink and stretch. A ten second seizure can feel like an eternity. Her activities are broken into small moments of time, making small tasks like folding laundry seem much larger.
