Omar’s Household

Omar, Cindy, and Bob live about two hours from San Francisco. Bob, not yet 10, has atypical autism (PDD-NOS) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Omar and Cindy are separated though for financial reasons remain under the same roof.

Omar worked in the technology industry but now stays at home to home-school Bob. Cindy works part-time at a restaurant.

Bob is homeschooled because the local school options to support a child like Bob are limited. To help with his disruptive behavior, an aide would need to be assigned to him. Aides are only assigned to special education classes. Since Bob is far more advanced in terms of learning than those classmates, Omar and Cindy thought home-schooling would be the best option.

Cindy made log entries during her participation, while Omar did not. He felt that because he was constantly supervising Bob, he was unable to complete one. Later, however, he recreated a log using the images from his Narrative Clip. He was the only participant in the Atlas study who did this.

Like many participants, Cindy found that the log made her more aware of the activities she performs. The log also exhibits Cindy and Omar’s difference of emotions and perspectives about what needs to be done.
