Sally’s Household

Sally lives with Pablo in a small town in California’s Central Valley. Pablo has many health conditions: XYY Chromosome Disorder, Hydrocephalus, mild mental retardation, anxiety, and behavioral and motor skill delays.

Sally worked as a lawyer before her caregiving responsibilities escalated. Sally has three children. Her oldest daughter lives about 30 minutes away. A younger daughter is in college and Pablo is the youngest. Sally’s husband left the family soon after Pablo was born.

She wants Pablo to be as independent as possible, however Sally worries because he doesn’t have an internal safeguard helping along in everyday things (like crossing the road).

The day of the Atlas study was relatively calm, though soon after her participation had concluded, Pablo hurt himself in a fall while breakdancing.

Sally is on constant standby to deal with small or large crises, and because of this, things like work and socializing are absent. Each day brings a different suite of conditions: Pablo’s mood can be psychotic or calm, he might seem unmotivated or highly motivated. To understand how Pablo is feeling, Sally has to observe indirect messages since Pablo doesn’t talk much and has an odd sense of humor.

Though aware of how much she does, logging provided her a renewed perspective on the extent of her caregiving activities. It helped her to better understand her fatigue. She explained, “It’s non-stop. It’s a constant movement of me for someone else. I don’t think about me until the end of the day. [On the day of the study] that’s when I realized I hadn’t had breakfast.” The log helped her see that she is on-call all the time. “It can be a lonely feeling. I don’t get to socialize anymore, but I don’t have the energy for that [anyway],” she said.
