Teddy’s Household

Teddy and Valerie lived on the East Coast when Van was initially diagnosed as having Aspergers (ADHD type) as well as encopresis. After trying a few different applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapists, they found one who was excellent. Working with that therapist, they were able to improve their caregiving of Van. They now live in the Bay Area and have not yet found an ABA therapist; they’ve noticed their caregiving skills have suffered as a result.

Van requires constant oversight and reminders. “He’s either not focused at all, or is hyper focused on something that’s not compliance related [such as reading a book],” explains Valerie.

Walter’s cyclical vomiting syndrome, a condition where one begins vomiting and cannot stop, has caused him to be admitted to the hospital three times in the past six months, including one a week prior to the family’s participation with the Atlas project.

During the time the family attended Van’s live action role-playing (LARP) event on both days. The event involves participants dressing up as a character in a live-action game.

Only Teddy kept a log, but Valerie made several entries on his behalf. Significantly, Teddy and Valerie estimated that they spend between 2-5 hours of caregiving a day. Perhaps because it was a weekend, the log shows over 10 hours of caregiving.

Also, when Valerie added a few logs on Teddy’s behalf, she read through and disagreed with some of Teddy’s entries. Valerie felt she was not being recognized for her contribution in certain activities. “I often do think I’m doing everything, and it is often completely unreasonable when I’m thinking that,” said Teddy. Valerie responded, “Yeah, I often think the same, too.”
